Bisphenol A produces a ‘clinically significant’ increase in blood pressure
Researchers from Seoul National University College of Medicine in South Korea have shown that just two hours after consuming food from a BPA-lined can, produced a clear increase in blood pressure and thus an increased risk of heart disease (Hypertension journal).
“Because these results confirm findings from other studies, doctors and patients, particularly those with high blood pressure or heart disease, should be aware of the possible risks from increased blood pressure when consuming canned foods or beverages,” researcher Dr. Yun-Chul Hong said.
Previous studies linked the widespread chemical with obesity and even cardiovascular disorders, respiratory problems, and nerve development problems in children. The World Health Organisation was ignored several years ago when it published a met-study on the dangers of the ‘endocrine-disrupting chemical’ and urged governments the world over to ban it.
Other endocrine disrupters like phthalates, parabens and toluene do not appear to have been tested here. BPA is found in plastic toys, plastic bottles and the white linings inside cans. 16 out of 17 fizzt soft drinks contained it in a Canadian study several years ago.
